Social Media & LinkedIn: Tip 4

When you join groups you can choose to either receive daily or weekly digests of the discussion posts.

However, when you post to a discussion, make sure you uncheck the little box under your post if you don't want to receive an email every time someone adds a post to the discussion.

Regardless of whether you choose daily or weekly digests, if you don't uncheck the box shown below you will receive an email every single time someone adds to the discussion.

It's not a big deal if there aren't many comments in a day. I once added an inspirational quote to a discussion that was generating about 70 comments per day. I received 70 comments every day for two weeks in my mailbox. I learned a lesson and hope this tip helps you.

Social Media & LinkedIn: Tip 3

Join 50 Groups. You probably think this is crazy tip #3. Have no fear. There are three great reasons for why you want to join up to 50 groups.

Reason #1 Learning Opportunity
Join groups that share information relevant to your expertise. Learn from them as much as you can to expand on the value you  provide to your customers and clients. While there may be individuals who are in the group to spam, but ignore them. It’s fairly easy to identify the thought leaders within a group and dialogue with them either directly or via discussions.

Reason #2 Be the Expert
Get involved in groups where you can be an expert contributor. When someone asks a question for which you have the expertise to respond, provide short, concise solutions. In time, you may become the “go to” person for your area of expertise.

Reason #3 Easy Networking
This is by far the most compelling reason to join as many groups as possible. If you have ever tried to add someone to your network and did not have a shared history in your biographies, you know how difficult it is to expand your network common biographies. You would have to know their email address or they must work to locate yours. Make it easy for them.

As with any social media marketing channel, you want to make it easy for your existing and prospective customers and donors to connect with you.

Share a LinkedIn group in common

By joining your customer’s groups, you make it easy for them to invite you to their network as you also make it easy for you to invite them. Once you both share membership in a group, a new radio button entitled “Group” appears. Click this and you can invite that person to join your network. (see examples)

Social Media & LinkedIn: Tip 2

What is the first thing people see when they visit your LinkedIn page?

First they will look at your picture so be sure you post a recent photo. I'll share more on that in a future post. After they look at your picture they will

Resist the urge to put your job title or resume bits in the summary area. Boring!

Rather, tell readers what you do... unless your job title is so titillating that readers will be intrigued and know exactly what you can do for them.

Choose instead to use keyword rich content to optimize your chances for prospective employers and customers to find you. Identify the challenges your prospects may have and how you propose to help them overcome that challenge.

Example:

Note: I tell readers what I do rather than my job title.

Some professionals include awards and achievements in this area. I prefer to tell readers WIIFM (What's in it for me?) if they are interested in my services.

What makes you, your services or your products unique?
Why should they contact you?
What can you do for readers that helps them solve a problem?

Social Media & LinkedIn: Tip 1

Are you one of those people who filled out all the fields on LinkedIn and are still waiting for those extraordinary social media marketing results? Wait no longer.
This series of Social Media Tips will begin with cool tips for getting the most out of LinkedIn. First, don’t just put the URL for your websites. With the free account, you can input up to three URLs or links. Rather than just type the generic URL, use keywords and add the link to your site.

To do this navigate down your LinkedIn page to the section that looks like this:

Click “Edit” next to “Additional Information”. Select “Other” from the drop-down menu next to “Websites”. Type your keywords in the middle box and paste your URL in the far right box. Save.
Now your network will see the keywords and know exactly where the link will lead them.
